Save the date ladies! On the first Friday of each month, Women Who Code Singapore meets at GeoWorks to bring you the event "WWCode social coding @ GeoWorks". Here at GeoWorks, we truly take the “work” out of networking as participants spend the first half an hour relaxing and chatting with like-minded women coders. Take the opportunity to mingle and get in touch with the wider coding community!

But make no mistake — while sessions have a relaxed atmosphere, the coding involved is nothing short of intense. In the course of a session, women coders brainstorm ideas and discover novel and innovative approaches to advance pre-existing open source projects, which run the gamut from healthcare to flood modelling.

During our latest session on 6 March, participants chose one of three projects to discuss and work on. For women coders interested in the nuances of transboundary insect-borne diseases, “Healthcare ASEAN” is the right project for you: not only can you gain significant insights on the spread of dengue and malaria within the ASEAN region, you can do so while exploring the potential of big data.

On the other hand, coders with prior experience or interest in augmented and virtual reality technology may find the “ARVR Flood Orchard” project more appealing. Here, women coders take the perspective of a rubber duckie navigating through the streets of Orchard Road during a flood and model a likely scenario.

Finally, for coders keen on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, “Project Miki” provides the perfect opportunity to explore Tesseract, an open source OCR, while resolving the perennial problem of how to split the bill after meals.
