Government to redevelop site in Alexandra for future public housing
The Government announced today that it will be redeveloping approximately 3.7 hectares(ha) of land on a brownfield site bounded by Alexandra Road, Prince Charles Crescent and Alexandra Canal for future public housing. When fully developed, the residential site will add approximately 1,500 flats to Singapore’s public housing landscape.
Meeting strong housing demand
2 Located in the mature estate of Bukit Merah, the site was previously occupied by low-rise blocks of public rental flats, as well as shops and a market. These were demolished in the 1990s to facilitate future development plans, which would better optimise land use. Since 1998, the site has been earmarked for residential development in URA’s Master Plan.
3 HDB will develop the site in the near term, to meet the strong demand for public housing. The new housing projects will add to the good geographical spread of public housing to meet the different needs of Singaporeans, including young families who want to live near their parents in the area for better mutual care and support.
4 The site’s location along the Alexandra Park Connector offers easy connectivity to the city, on top of the recreational offerings along this corridor. Future residents will also be well-served by the nearby Redhill MRT Station which is located about 400 metres away from the site. HDB is currently drawing up detailed plans for the public housing projects at Alexandra Road/ Prince Charles Crescent, and will share more details when ready.
Acquisition of Alexandra Post Office5 To facilitate the development of public housing at Alexandra Road/ Prince Charles Crescent, 0.23ha of land within the development boundary, which is currently occupied by Alexandra Post Office and SingPost’s tenant, will be acquired by the Government. This will allow for more residential units to be built to meet the strong demand for housing, and enable a more optimal planning and design of the public housing projects (e.g. better layout within the projects, and better connectivity from the development to surrounding amenities).

6 The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has gazetted the acquisition of the affected land today. SLA and HDB will work closely with SingPost and its tenant and assist them through the acquisition process.
