Singapore, 9 January 2017 – The Local People teams up with the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) to breathe life into the gravel pavement under the West Coast Viaduct. Join us for the first art market of its kind on 21 January from 7pm to 1am.

SLA Chief Executive Mr Tan Boon Khai said, “We are constantly looking into ways to creatively adapt State land and properties for interim use. Through ideas generated from public engagement, the land under West Coast viaduct has been fitted out with electricity as well as modular structures to facilitate the piloting of new concepts by social groups and entrepreneurs. We are pleased to launch this space with a night art market for the community.”

You’ll have to put in a little effort searching for the space but we know that hasn’t stopped you so far. Reminiscent of the other hard to reach places such as a rooftop car park or a cramped L-shaped alley, the Duct Tape Party will be one you’d want to check out. (Hint: we’re just diagonally opposite The Cheese Prata Shop at 18 Clementi Road)

Expect an art market of Singapore-made or -designed wares specially curated by The Local People, including psychedelic-coloured juice blends from @thejuicyway, animal-friendly make-up brushes by @13rushes and dehydrated coconut chips made from scratch by @loconoshsg. And if you’re coming hungry, make a beeline for food truck, Kerbside Gourmet, for a helping of steaming, tasty grub.

For entertainment, we’ve got you covered. Apart from intimate music sets with our favourite songbirds, we encourage you to bring a mat, put your legs up and lie down for a screening (projected on the underside of the viaduct) of the eight films from the Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition 2016. Organised by the Singapore Film Society, the annual contest encourages a documentation of the country’s lesser-known stories such as Art of Singapore that features the last movie poster painter, Ang Hao Sai.

When you come by, don’t forget to bring an item to donate to Food from the Heart and support a charitable cause! Like the food donation drive at the TLP X SLA Express Art Market at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station last year, we welcome an assortment of dried and canned goods. (Find the full list of items at our event page.)

That’s not all! Try your hand at creating life-sized art using duct tape. Use coloured tape or bring your own patterned ones to stick onto wooden planks placed throughout the area. Complete someone else’s artwork or start your own!

The land under West Coast Viaduct and modular office spaces are now available for short term lease from SLA. If you have a creative concept or a community project and would like to rent a space at this site or any of the available State land and properties managed by SLA, write in to SLA_Pty_Enquiry@sla.gov.sg for leasing details.
