Joint News Release

Date of Issue: 28 August 2013

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be widening Clementi Road between Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) and Bukit Timah Road to improve overall traffic flow along the road corridor.

2. Clementi Road is a major arterial road that serves as a key connection between Clementi Town, Pan Island Expressway (PIE) and AYE. It serves various major educational institutions such as Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), Singapore Polytechnic, NUS High School and Nan Hua High School. Clementi Road is also a main access road for residential estates in Sunset Way and Ulu Pandan.

3. The widening of Clementi Road from dual-three lanes to dual-four lanes in both directions will increase the road capacity to cater to traffic demand from future developments in National University of Singapore (NUS), Clementi Town and along Clementi Road. The widening will also facilitate the movement of buses plying along this road. Major traffic junctions along Clementi Road will also be enhanced to reduce waiting times. As part of the project, LTA will widen a stretch of Commonwealth Avenue West (westbound) between Clementi Road and Clementi Avenue 6. When completed, motorists can expect a smoother traffic flow along Clementi Road and the surrounding road network. Please refer to Annex A for the location plan.

4. LTA will call a tender for the project shortly. Construction works are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2014 and be completed by the first quarter of 2017. LTA will work closely with the appointed contractor to minimise any inconveniences to residents and occupants living or working in close proximity to the works.

Land Acquisition

5. To facilitate the works, the Government will need to acquire a part of private land under the Land Acquisition Act. Two narrow sections of a grass verge of the NUS University Town will be acquired for this project. The main building structures of the University Town will not be affected. The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has gazetted the land affected by the acquisition today.

6. SLA and LTA are in touch with the affected landowner to assist with any queries and concerns.
