The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has called for its very first public tender for State property on offshore Pulau Ubin island this month -- 8V Pulau Ubin, a former Civil Service Chalet under Civil Service Clubhouse. It was returned to SLA in September 2001. Please see a photo enclosed. The tender which opened early this month has already attracted 6 potential tenants at a recent site show round. These potential bidders come from various industries including computer software, property management and the hostelling industry. (See contact details at the end of this release.)

The property has a site area of about 6,505 square metres and gross floor area of about 783 square metres, equivalent to about three tennis courts. It comprises three blocks of single-storey buildings with a camp, a pump house, three shelters and some ancillary facilities. Capitalizing on the rustic charm of the island, the approved uses adapted some of the former recreational uses, including that of a Bed & Breakfast, or a chalet or resort for short term lodging. It can also be used as a campsite or for group and corporate retreats for the conduct of team building, leadership or motivational activities. This is to cater to the traveller and tourist who are looking for a unique experience in rustic Singapore, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The tenure is on the typical three-year term with an option to renew for another two three-year terms till 2016. SLA's Director of Land Business & Management, Mr Clarence Ti, would like to "encourage businessmen to take full advantage of this idyllic seaside property to develop signature projects so as to provide citizens and tourists unique island getaway experiences."

For more information on this tender, please visit SLA's State Property and Information Online (SPIO) web portal (https://app1.sla.gov.sg/spio) or call the SPIO hotline at 63239154. The tender documents are available on http://www.gebiz.gov.sg/. Tender closes on 11 am, Friday, 22 December. Tender applications may be deposited at level 26, Temasek Towers, Singapore Land Authority, Customer Service Centre.

The second property to look out for on Pulau Ubin is a first new use by a non-profit organisation, Singapore Environment Council (SEC), for the Environmental Hub, on 34 Pulau Ubin. This State property has a gross floor area of about 107 square metres and land area of close to 200 square metres. Please see a photo enclosed. Environmental Hub is to be established to serve as an on-going permanent exhibition centre to educate Pulau Ubin residents and visitors on the need to reduce, reuse and recycle. It is expected to be ready on 24 February 2007.

The SEC was interested to use this second site, 34 Pulau Ubin, as a volunteer eco centre where members of the public can partner with the hub to push out exhibitions, green awareness programmes to everyone. The tenure is on a renewable three-year term with an option to renew for another three-year term till 2012.

Mr Ti said, "The way a society makes available space to build awareness of the environment and environmental issues speaks a lot about the maturity of the society. SLA is pleased to be able to contribute to this project and others over the years. This is our second project with the Singapore Environment Council, the first being the Earth from Above exhibition on Orchard Road".
