THE SITE AT 38 OXLEY ROAD TO BE ACQUIRED FOLLOWING ITS GAZETTE AS A NATIONAL MONUMENT
29 January 2026
Singapore, 29 January 2026 – Following the gazette of the site at 38 Oxley Road (the “Site”) as a National Monument on 12 December 2025, the Site was gazetted for acquisition today in order to safeguard and preserve it in keeping with its historic significance and national importance.
2 Preserving and acquiring the Site means that it cannot be redeveloped for residential, commercial or other private uses. After acquisition, the relevant authorities will assess the condition of the buildings and structures within the Site, and undertake a detailed study to consider the next steps. All options, including those outlined by the 2018 Ministerial Committee, will be considered before a decision is made. Regardless of the option taken, the Government has committed to respecting Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s (“Mr Lee”) wishes to protect his family’s privacy, by removing all traces of their private living spaces from the interior of the house. Under no circumstances will the interior of the house as Mr Lee knew, be displayed, recorded, remodelled or duplicated elsewhere.
3 The Singapore Land Authority and the National Heritage Board will work with the owner through the acquisition process. The compensation for the Site will be determined in accordance with the Land Acquisition Act 1966 which will take into account the market value of the acquired Site as at the date of the gazette of the acquisition and claims submitted by the persons interested.
