About Gillman Barracks
Gillman Barracks is known for its rustic charm and ample outdoor space amidst lush greenery. It has an estimated site area of 6.6ha and comprises 17 iconic colonial State properties. Popular with cyclists and hiking enthusiasts, Gillman Barracks is strategically surrounded by the Southern Ridges loop (Alexandra Garden Trail and Henderson Park Connectors) and is close to the upcoming Alexandra Nature Park in the Labrador area. The enclave is known for both its arts as well as F&B offerings.
History of Gillman Barracks
Named after General Sir Webb Gillman, a well-known officer of the British Army, Gillman Barracks was built in 1936. It housed army barrack buildings, married quarters, and even recreational facilities, built specially for the British’s 1st Battalion before World War II.
During World War II, the Barracks and its surrounding area was one of Singapore’s last battle sites before her fall. Fortunately, the site survived the war when Singapore regained British rule in September 1945. Even after Singapore’s independence, Gillman Barracks was a key site used by the Singapore Armed Forces for the training of national service men.
A Vibrant Lifestyle Enclave
In March 2020, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) took over the management of Gillman Barracks. As part of efforts to unlock greater value from State properties through new and innovative ideas, SLA launched the rejuvenation plans for Gillman Barracks in May 2022, to transform the precinct into a vibrant creative lifestyle enclave with enhanced infrastructure, innovative F&B and lifestyle offerings.
The rejuvenation plans include the launch of tenders for innovative F&B/retail operators within Gillman Barracks, to bring in concepts such as farmers’ markets, farm-to-table dining options and lifestyle workshops for varying ages. The precinct’s infrastructure will also be upgraded to create a more enjoyable and memorable visitor experience.
An overall ‘facelift’ will be carried out for Gillman Barracks through the upgrading of common washrooms with eco-friendly sanitary fittings and covered walkways. A new thematic playground will also be built to provide an additional recreation spot for families with children.
Singaporeans can look forward to a rejuvenated Gillman Barracks with a wide range of programmes and offerings such as unique dining experiences, farmers’ markets, and creative learning opportunities by mid-2023.
